JU student dies after being hit by battery-run rickshaw, protests erupt for justice

A student died after being hit by a battery-run rickshaw near the Shaheed Minar adjacent to the New Arts Building at Jahangirnagar University this evening (19 November).
The deceased, Afsana Rachi, was a student of the 53rd batch of the Marketing Department at the university. She was a resident student of Begum Khaleda Zia Hall.
Afsana was initially taken to the university's medical center after the accident and later transferred to Enam Medical College Hospital in Savar, where the duty doctor declared her dead.

Eyewitnesses said that a rickshaw was approaching quickly from the main gate of the university (Dairy Gate) toward the New Kala Bhaban. At the same time, another rickshaw was heading toward Dairy Gate at high speed.
The two rickshaws came face to face, and in an attempt to avoid a collision, one of them lost control and hit the student who was walking across the road. The impact caused the student to be thrown and hit a tree.
She was severely injured and was immediately taken to the university's medical centre, they added.
Enam's on-duty doctor, Rakib Al Mahmud Shuvo, told TBS, "When we received her, her pupils were fixed. We couldn't detect any heartbeats, so we immediately performed an ECG. There was a dark bruise on her chest indicating a heavy impact."
Duty Manager Shobuj said, "She was brought to Enam Medical College Hospital at exactly 7:30pm. We found her already deceased. There were no major injuries on her body, but her teeth and gums had been displaced. This injury likely led to her death."
Following her tragic death, students from the 53rd batch of Jahangirnagar University held a protest march in front of the new Arts Building, demanding justice for the incident.
Pro-VC (Administration) Professor Sohel Ahmed said, "We have already identified the culprit rickshaw driver by reviewing CCTV footage. We went to his house in Gerua, but he was not there. We will take immediate action and make a decision regarding the cessation of battery-operated rickshaws on campus."
