A group of unidentified people set fire to the home of Awami League Presidium Member and former minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya in Chandpur last night (16 November).

Before starting the fire, the attackers vandalised and looted the two three-storey buildings of the residence located at Mohonpur in the district's Matlab North upazila at around 11pm, said police.

After being informed, police, army, and fire service personnel rushed to the scene and brought the situation under control before much damage.

"We learned about the fire at around 11pm after the ground floors of both buildings were set ablaze. Firefighting teams went to the scene and quickly controlled the fire," Nurul Karim, in-charge of Matlab North Fire Service and Civil Defence, told The Business Standard today (17 November).

Matlab North Police Station Officer-in-Charge (Investigation) Pradip Mandal said they notified the higher-ups right away and went to the scene with the joint force in charge. "We are investigating. Necessary legal steps will follow."

The district's Additional Superintendent of Police (Matlab Circle) Khairul Kabir Chowdhury also made similar remarks. "We learned about the vandalism and looting at former MP Maya's home in the evening. We responded promptly with the army, police, and fire service," he said.

The fire had damaged the ground floors of both buildings but the flames were quickly contained by the fire service, preventing further damage, he added.

Meanwhile, Matlab North upazila BNP Senior Vice-President Sarwar Majumder condemned the incident and claimed none of their party members were involved in it. "I have heard that there is an internal dispute among their [Awami League] factions, which could have led to this incident," he said.

After the student-led mass upsurge ousted former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and her government on 5 August, senior Awami League leader Maya went into hiding like many others of the party. There are multiple cases against him in Chandpur, Narayanganj, and Dhaka.
