Affected minorities will get justice, compensation: Nahid

Those involved in the recent incidents of minority abuse after 5 August will be brought to justice and the affected minority communities will be compensated, said Nahid Islam, adviser to the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications, and Information Technology.

He made the remark during a meeting with a UNESCO delegation led by its country representative Dr Susan Vize.

There is a deliberate misinformation campaign on social media and various international outlets aimed at discrediting Bangladesh's current government and its movements, Nahid said, urging everyone to remain vigilant against such attempts.

Susan Vize expressed UNESCO interest in working collaboratively with Bangladesh on artificial intelligence (AI). She sought the adviser's approval to continue the AI Research Activities Management project, which evaluates how capable the public is in applying AI technologies.

Nahid emphasised that AI is essential for Bangladesh to stay in sync with modern developments.

He assured that the ministry would fully support the ongoing AI RAM project, and he mentioned the possibility of reviewing the National Steering Committee on this matter.

The adviser also mentioned that several journalists were injured during the student protests, and they will be compensated. Meanwhile, there is public dissatisfaction with a faction of journalists who collaborated with the "fascist government", leading to lawsuits and arrests, he said.

However, to ensure everyone's legal rights, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has formed a committee to provide legal support to them, he added.
