Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL) has formed a probe committee to find out the reasons behind the glitch that halted metro rail services yesterday (18 September).

The 7-member committee will also propose possible steps to avert such a situation in the future, said an office order by DMTCL.

Metro rail services witnessed a temporary shutdown on the Agargaon-Motijheel portion yesterday due to the displacement of the bearing of a viaduct. It took 11 hours of intense effort to resume the services from Agargaon to Motijheel. Before that metro rail was being operated from Uttara to Agargaon.

The bearing of a viaduct of the metro rail fell apart in front of Islamia Eye Hospital at Khamarbari intersection around 9:40am. The issue was fixed and metro rail services resumed completely around 8:25pm, the office order said.

According to the office order, a 7-member committee has been formed to inquire about the reasons behind the glitch.

Director (Planning and Development) of DMTCL Md Abdul Baki Mia has been made the convener of the probe committee.

The Bangladesh Railway (BR) has started selling advance tickets for homebound passengers on the occasion of the holy Eid-ul-Adha.

"All advance train tickets are being sold online. However, unsold tickets will be available at the counter during the final period," Director General of BR Md Afzal Hossain told BSS today (22 May).

Hossain said the government will arrange five additional pairs of special trains to ensure a smooth and hassle-free Eid journey.

He also said return train tickets will be available from 30 May.

According to BR sources, the sale of advance tickets for all intercity trains in the western zone began at 8 am on Wednesday, while tickets for eastern zone trains were available from 2 pm.

A total of 33,315 seats will be available in 43 intercity trains from Dhaka to various parts of the country, the sources added.

Advance tickets are being sold as follows: for journeys on May 31, tickets were available on May 21; for June 1, on May 22; for June 2, on May 23; for June 3, on May 24; for June 4, on May 25; for June 5, on May 26; and for June 6, on May 27.

The Director General said each passenger may purchase a maximum of four tickets with one user ID. He added that, upon passengers' request, BR has decided to sell 25 percent standing tickets against the total number of seats from station counters.

The BR sources said the weekly holidays of all intercity trains will remain suspended from June 3 until the day before Eid. After Eid-ul-Adha, the intercity train services will return to their regular schedule. However, no intercity train services will be available on Eid day.

Depending on the sighting of the moon, Eid-ul-Adha is expected to be celebrated on June 7 or 8.

All vessels to be made smoke-free: BIWTC

Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) will take necessary steps to make all its vessels, including ferries, completely smoke-free, the agency's Chairman Md Salim Ullah said today (22 May).

He said, "To protect public health and safeguard people from the harms of secondhand smoke, BIWTC has announced plans to take necessary steps to make all its vessels, including ferries, completely smoke-free," he told a discussion titled 'Measures to Ensure 100% Smoke-Free Water Transport'.

The event was jointly organised by Dhaka Ahsania Mission and Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) at the BIWTC conference room.
BIWTC Chairman Md. Salim Ullah presided over the event, while Assistant Secretary of the Ministry of Shipping Belayet Hossain, Mashruk Ahmed from the Department of Shipping, BIWTC's General Manager (Administration) Jesmin Ara Begum, Technical Director Kazi Wasif Ahmad, Helal Uddin from the river police and Deputy Director of the Health Sector at Dhaka Ahsania Mission Mokhlesur Rahman were present.

In the keynote presentation, Shariful Islam, Coordinator of the Tobacco Control Project of Dhaka Ahsania Mission, shared findings from the Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS) 2017, which revealed that approximately 37.8 million people in Bangladesh use tobacco products.

Among them, 19.2 million are smokers, while nearly 40 million non-smokers are exposed to secondhand smoke. The rate of secondhand smoke exposure is 42.7%, with 44% of individuals exposed in public transport. Ferries and passenger vessels fall under public transport, where such exposure is a daily occurrence.

Speakers at the event pointed out that smoking is often seen in various areas on ferries. Even in ferry canteens, passengers are exposed to secondhand smoke. To protect everyone from the harms of secondhand smoke, it is essential to implement strict measures to make ferries and all vessels entirely smoke-free.

However, the meeting called for active efforts to issue necessary directives to make all BIWTC vessels smoke-free, install appropriate no-smoking signage, and ensure all BIWTC offices are 100% smoke-free and free of designated smoking zones.
