Filmmaker Ashfaque Nipun has turned down an offer to join the Bangladesh Film Censor Board, which was restructured yesterday (15 September) through a notification by the Ministry of Cultural Affairs.

The filmmaker wrote in a Facebook post, "I have always been against the practice of censor boards in film or art. I feel highly honoured that the ministry considered me worthy of becoming a board member."

"However, there was a miscommunication. I did not accept the official membership of this board. I have respectfully declined. I have already discussed this matter with the Ministry of Information," he added.

He further clarified his stance and said he stands in favour of abolishing the censor board.

"I wish the rest of the members of the newly formed censor board who are my colleagues to be on the side of abolishing the board and introducing censor certification board or grading system at the earliest," he added.

In addition to Ashfaque Nipun, other notable additions to the board include actress-puppeteer and activist Quazi Nawshaba Ahmed, popular writer Mohammad Nazimuddin, renowned filmmaker Khijir Hayat Khan, filmmaker-researcher and academic Zakir Hossain Raju, author-screenwriter and filmmaker Tasmiah Afrin Mou, and film producer-director Rafiqul Anowar Russell, among others.
