HC orders Election Commission to register AB Party as political party

The Election Commission rejected the party's application for registration in a letter on 24 July 2023. Challenging the validity of this letter, the party's convener, AFM Solaiman Chowdhury, filed a writ in the High Court.

The High Court has directed the Election Commission to grant registration to the political party "Amar Bangladesh Party" (AB Party).

The High Court bench of Justice Naima Haider and Justice Shashank Shekhar Sarkar passed the order today (19 August).

Lawyer Mohammad Tajul Islam, who is the joint convener of the party, moved for the writ in the court.

Earlier, on 31 August 2023, following the initial hearing of a writ filed by the party's convener, the High Court issued a rule asking why the AB Party should not be granted registration.

On 24 July of the same year, the Election Commission rejected the party's application for registration in a letter. Challenging the validity of this letter, the party's convener, AFM Solaiman Chowdhury, filed a writ in the High Court.

Lawyer Tajul Islam mentioned that the letter dated 24 July stated that out of the information provided for 104 upazilas (sub-districts), only 25 were correct, and the information for the remaining 79 did not meet the conditions.

However, the specific upazilas for which the information was found to be incorrect were not mentioned. He argued that they had provided accurate information for all 104 upazilas, yet the registration was still denied, he added.

The AB Party was launched on 2 May 2020. The party was formed by some leaders and activists who split from Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing, Islami Chhatra Shibir.
