A garment worker was arrested on Tuesday evening for spreading rumor that a worker was killed by the police, which led to vandalise Muazuddin Textile Ltd at Shafipur in Kaliakoir of Gazipur earlier in the same day.

Confirming the matter to The Business Standard, an official of Industrial Police said that they have arrested the worker, Badal, over the allegation of spreading the rumor.

"The arrestee is now under the custody of Detective Branch (DB) of police", he said.

Some 2,000 workers of the factory were dissatisfied about the fact that the factory owners paid them 60 percent on Monday as per the government directive, whereas they had been demanding full wages for last few days.

They started strike from 9:30am Tuesday and later when police reached the spot, a rumour was spread that a worker was killed by the police and then angry workers vandalised the factory.

They also beat about 12 officials of the factory and confined them inside. About one hour later police controlled the situation.
