Govt won't obstruct peaceful programmes of BNP: Quader
But if the BNP resorts to violence in the name of the movement, it will be obstructed, the AL leader warns
Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader today said the government will not obstruct any peaceful programmes of the BNP.
But if the BNP resorts to violence in the name of the movement, it will be obstructed, he warned at a press briefing at the party president's Dhanmondi office in Dhaka.
Quader said, "The main issue of the opposition's politics is [to prove] that the government is a criminal of all crimes. The BNP still goes to the US embassy to complain. This is the state of our main opposition party. They formed an anti-government alliance with 54 parties. Where is that unity? None of them exist."

Regarding the arrests of BNP leaders, the AL general secretary said they were arrested on charges of attacking police, killing a police officer, assaulting the Chief Justice's residence, assaulting journalists, attacking the judge's chamber, and attacking a police hospital.
Why will we obstruct them if they hold peaceful programmes?
"They said they wouldn't surrender, so why did they surrender? Surrendering means they committed the crimes. That day they committed some crimes, so they had to be arrested."
The matter is now sub judice, he said, adding that they were released from jails as courts granted them bail.
In response to BNP leaders' claims that the BNP "has won the election", the Quader said everyone knows who won the election.
"The BNP has won the election without even participating in the election? What is this if not the ravings of a madman?"
About the recent clashes between Chhatra League activists at Chittagong University, Quader said action is being taken and the party high-ups are rethinking the way of handling such issues.
He said the party has decided to be as tough as necessary to prevent a recurrence of such incidents.
