A luxury drive into the sunset

A luxury drive into the sunset

As the key was placed in the ignition and turned clockwise, the sleeping engine roared into life from its long slumber. Through a small opening, the rays of the sun fell on top of the car, instantly illuminating its silver armour.

Slowly and steadily, the two seater Mazda MX5 left its parking spot, all set to dash into the busy streets of Dhaka.

As the car left the garage, its owner Fahim, parked neatly in front of his residence. Unbuckling the seatbelt, he got up and undid the roof to block the sun beaming overhead.

With all set and done, Fahim hit the accelerator as the car roared with all its might towards the sleeping city.

The Mazda MX5 is one of the 21 cars owned by avid car collector Sadab Monowar Fahim. Widely noted for its small, light, technologically modern, dynamically balanced and minimally complex design, the MX-5 is the spiritual successor to 50s and 60s Italian and British sports cars.

So where did Fahim get this knack of collecting cars? "Well frankly speaking, from my dad. I literally grew up seeing his car collection which inspired me to be a car collector myself," boasted Fahim with a smile.

Other notable mentions in his collection includes BMW Three, Five and Seven Series, a Toyota Chaser, Mercedes E300, Toyota MRS, Lexus 475 and a Porsche Macan among others.

From the above mentioned ones, the BMW seven series is used the most. The full-size luxury sedan is the successor to the BMW E3 "New Six" sedan and is currently in its sixth generation.

Unlike the Three Series and Five Series saloons, BMW has not produced an M model for the 7 Series (i.e. an "M7"). However, in 2014, an "M Performance" option became available for the 7 Series.

Being reconditioned, the BMW Seven Series costed around BDT 95 lakh. A branded one costs around BDT 2 crore and 90 lakh.

When asked about modifications, Fahim informed, "Being a stock, BMW Seven Series doesn't need any modifications. It's an absolute luxury; you just buy one and drive it into the sunset."

Maintenance costs around BDT 1 lakh 10 thousand every three months. In the current market context, this is pretty expensive opting many car lovers to import the car parts from abroad thus cutting the maintenance cost by half.

With so many cars in his stock, Fahin is eagerly counting the days for his Khulna visit.

Why so? "Well as of this moment, I have a Range Rover waiting at Mongla Port for clearance. After completing the formalities of Eid, I will embark for Khulna with my latest addition," revealed Fahim.

For this young car enthusiast, the thirst for owning yet another posh, smooth, eye-turning ride is not coming to the end of the road anytime soon, probably not ever!
