Workers of "Divine Garments" at Chowgacha in Jashore held protests Tuesday noon, demanding proper coronavirus prevention measures at their workplace.

The agitation began in front of the factory after a female worker of the factory tested positive for coronavirus.

Divine Group has two factories — Divine Garments and Divine Fashion — at Chowgacha where almost two thousand people work.

Like many other places in the country, the Divine Garments authorities resumed production after the national holidays ended despite that the upazila is under lockdown since April 23.

On Sunday, when the factory opened, workers were scanned before entering the factory. During the scanning, a female and a male worker were found to have coronavirus symptoms and not allowed to enter the factory.

The woman went to the upazila health complex for sample testing the same day and her test samples were sent to Jashore University of Science and Technology for tests.

On Monday morning, the upazila health officer confirmed that her results were positive for coronavirus and advised that the factory be locked down.

When the other workers came to know about the matter, they started protests.

Later, at the request of Upazila Nirbahi Officer Jahidul Islam, the upazila Awami League General Secretary and Fulsera Union Parishad Chairman Mehedi Masud Chowdhury visited the spot and assured the workers that he would speak to Hasanuzzaman Rahin, the factory owner.

Regional Manager of Chowgacha region of Divine Hamiduzzaman Sagor said, "On Sunday when the factory opened, we found the woman with a cold and light fever and did not let her into the factory."

"The workers who came in her contact have been sent on leave. Yet some workers created such disarray," Sagor added.
