The BNP, Jamaat-e-Islami and other parties once again enforced a 48-hour countrywide road-rail-waterway blockade on Wednesday and Thursday to mount pressure on the government to quit and hold the next general elections under a non-partisan administration.

BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi made the announcement during a press conference Monday (6 November).

Another bus set ablaze in Banani

Another bus was set on fire this evening. The last one was set in the Banani area. There were no reports of casualties in the incident.

Bus set ablaze in Dhaka's Tantibazar amid blockade

Unidentified people set a bus on fire at the Tantibazar intersection in Old Dhaka on Wednesday night amid the countrywide 48-hour blockade enforced by BNP and like-minded opposition parties.

Two firefighting units of Sadarghat Fire Station rushed to the spot around 7:33pm when the buses were set on fire, said Tanha Bin Zasim, station officer of the Fire Service and Civil Defence Control Room (media).

On 6 November, BNP, Jamaat and like-minded parties announced a 48-hour road-rail-waterways blockade across the country beginning from Wednesday.

On the first day of the third phase of the BNP-Jamaat's blockade, party supporters brought out processions and picketed by burning tires at different points of Chattogram on Wednesday, November 8 early morning. However, there has been no impact of the blockade in or around the city as the traffic movement remained normal throughout the day.

Leaders and activists of the ruling party Awami League took positions at important points in the city and held peace rallies while a huge number of police members patrolled the city roads to maintain law and order situation.

Idris Ali, the former deputy office secretary of Nagar BNP and current coordinator of the office, said leaders and activists of Chattogram Metropolitan Chhatra Dal convened at the Pahartali area.

Spina Rani Pramanik, additional deputy police commissioner of CMP's Media and Public Relations Department, said, "As of 3 pm on Wednesday, "I have not received any reports of untoward incidents in the city. A sufficient number of police have been deployed to uphold law and order. The overall situation regarding law and order remained stable."

A covered van of a courier service was set on fire in the Shapmara area of Matiranga upazila in Khagrachhari on Wednesday morning amid the first day of the countrywide 48-hour blockade BNP and like-minded parties called.

The fire service rushed to the spot and brought the fire under control, reports UNB.

Md Jakaria, officer-in-charge of Matiranga Police Station, confirmed the matter.

Khagrachhari Superintendent of Police Mukta Dhar said they are ready to provide all possible assistance to ensure the smooth movement of the general public.

Sujon Molla, general secretary of JnU Chhatra Dal, led the procession at Islampur of Old Dhaka this afternoon.

The procession paraded through Islampur and Patuatuli Road, concluding at the Sadarghat intersection. 

Following the rally, the speakers made a resolute commitment to take to the streets to fulfill the one-point demand.

On the first day of the third phase of the nationwide blockade, Jamaat activists clashed with police in different areas of Bogura today (8 November), resulting in injuries to at least 10 Jamaat leaders. 

Contacted, Bogura Additional Superintendent of Police Snigdh Akhtar said the law and order forces remain on high alert in the field to ensure the security of people and property.

Around 160 patrol teams of RAB forces along with 460 toil teams have been deployed across the country to maintain the law and order situation in the capital.

A protest march in support of the blockade is taking place in Bogra, Sherpur led by the former elected president of the Central Chhatra Dal, a member of the executive committee of the BNP Md Fazlur Rahman Khokon.

BGB troops have been deployed in Ashulia, Savar, Mirpur, Gazipur and other parts of the country, said, Sharuiful Islam, public relations officer at BGB headquarters.

The government on Tuesday announced Tk 12,500 as minimum salary for entry level readymade garment (RMG) factory workers, raising it by 56.25 percent from the current wage.
