The Counter-Terrorism and Transnational Crime unit (CTTC) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police on Friday (23 June) arrested militant group Jama'atul Ansar Fil Hindal Sharqiya's founder Shamin Mahfuz and his wife from the capital's Demra area.

A huge number of arms and explosives were also seized from their possession, claimed CTTC officials.

DMP Additional Commissioner of Police (CTTC) Md Asaduzzaman confirmed the arrest to The Business Standard adding that they will brief the incident to the media at the DMP media centre on Saturday noon.

Jamatul Ansar Fil Hindal Sharqiya founder Shamin Mahfuz joined hands with the Kuki Chin (KNF) chief Nathan Bom to train and facilitate extremists and members of the militant outfit, said Md Asaduzzaman, additional commissioner and chief of Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime Unit of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.

He briefed the media on Saturday at the DMP media centre.

CTTC chief also claimed that in the guide of PhD degree research, Shamin Mahfuz started militant activities at hill tracts areas.

"He[Shamin Mahfuz] planned and chalked out the new militant outfit while he was in Kashimpur jail. He met several other militant leaders there. His wife also united and regrouped female members of the newly made outfit," said Md Asaduzzaman.

The CTTC chief also said that they have pleaded for ten days' remand before the court for Shamin Mahfuz.

CTTC chief added that he started the militant organisation to start a fight against the state and the country, and he had an initial plan for it.
