The Ministry of Commerce has lifted the ban on export of locally-made face masks and hand sanitisers.

The government slapped a ban on the locally-made products on March 12, a commerce ministry press release on Thursday said.

The ban was imposed as a part of precautionary measures taken in response to the growing domestic demand for the items amid the global coronavirus outbreak.

The demand for masks and sanitisers surged abnormally after the country reported its maiden three coronavirus cases on March 8.

Following the announcement, Dhaka dwellers struggled to find face masks and hand sanitisers in the market amid a shortage of the products.

A section of the traders hiked the prices of normal face masks from Tk5 to Tk50 and standard quality face masks from Tk20-Tk30 to Tk100-Tk150 in the city.

Against such backdrop, the government moved to impose the export ban on the products.
