Disastrous Bowling, Disappointing Result

Bangladesh faced England in their third match of the 2019 Cricket World Cup, where they suffered a 106 run defeat to the hosts at the Sophia Gardens in Cardiff. Batting first, England piled up a humongous 386 on the back of Jason Roy's 153. Despite Shakib Al Hasan's valiant century, Bangladesh was bundled out for only 280.

Disastrous Bowling, Disappointing Result

Bangladesh was defeated by England by a huge 106 runs in their Third World Cup match in Cardiff. Chasing 387, Bangladesh never looked like winning, and they ended up bowled out for 280.

Cardiff had been a lucky ground for Bangladesh over the years. The only victory against Australia came in the Sophia Gardens, and two years back, in the same venue Shakib and Mahmudullah put up an enormous partnership to knock out New Zealand of the Champions Trophy and take Bangladesh to the semis. Bangladesh hoped for third time lucky, but they were outplayed in every department.

Chasing 387, Bangladesh never went off their blocks. Soumya Sarkar's feet moved nowhere as a fast Archer delivery went through his defenses and hit the top of off stump. As Shakib tried to accelerate, Tamim continuously looked lethargic and got out for another low score in his third match running. Shakib and Mushfiq rebuilt the innings but the target was way too big, and Mushfiq went for 44 after Liam Plunkett found his edge. Shakib went on to become the second Bangladeshi centurion in World Cups, but his valiant effort went in vain as nobody in the lower middle order could score any substantial amount of runs. Bangladesh was bowled out for 280, 106 runs short of the target. Archer and Stokes picked up three wickets each, while Mark Wood picked up a couple.

Earlier in the day, Mashrafe won the toss and elected to field to use the moisture in the pitch. Bangladesh named an unchanged side, whereas England picked up Liam Plunkett to replace Moeen Ali. The decision backfired as Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow milked runs easily. Mashrafe picked up Bairstow after his fifty but Roy went on to score a mammoth 153, hitting bowlers all around the park. Jos Butler's fifty set up a grandstand finish, and Liam Plunkett's cameo of 27 runs at a strike rate of 300 took England's team total to a colossal 386. Bangladesh was ordinary in the field as well as their death bowling, with questionable decisions from the Captain added to the misery. Saifuddin and Mehidy both picked up a couple of wickets, while Mashrafe and Mustafizur picked up a scalp each.

Jason Roy was adjourned Man of the Match for his marvelous 153 off 121 balls, as Shakib Al Hasan's ton took him to the top spot of the highest run-scorers chart.

Bangladesh now sits 8th on the points table with only one victory from three matches, whereas England moved up to the second spot with two wins in three.
