The 80s: A bold and beautiful decade

In terms of fashion, minimalism has been the go to look for people of all ages. Having said that, it seems that there is a certain change in the wind.

Fed up with the monotony of the current fashion trends, stylists, fashion designers and style icons have bought forward a new wave of maximal fashion that appears straight from the 80s.

Wide shoulders, bright colours, and chunky jewelleries are making the headlines once again.

It seems as if individuals are once again channelling their inner Madonna and Michael Jackson, which include bright colours, geometric shapes and graphic patterns; top trends of the 80s.

If you contemplate while walking down the memory lane, the 80swas all about being 'excess'. The styles had to be big, bold and at the same time, highly glamorous.

All of these trends can be credited back to Ettore Sottsass and 'The Memphis Group' (1981-1987) who dominated the 80s fashion world; thanks to their unpredictable and eye-captivating designs.

Though their designs and home décor did not make into many living rooms, many style and fashion icons picked up the eccentric designs made by the group.

By the day, ladies preferred power suits with big shoulder pads to prove that they were just as powerful as their male counter-parts and at night, they glammed-up in sequins and one-shoulder styles.

The love for brands and designer labels were also quite prominent throughout the decade. A glimpse into the second half however, presents a certain fondness for punk fashion, thanks to the celebrities of the day.

This contributed to the popular 90s grunge fashion of that time. The intense and edgy rebellious look that included studded leatherjackets, ripped jeans, banded t-shirts and heavy-duty boots are becoming popular once again in 2019.

In contrast, these days they are more casual and slightly toned down when compared to the 80s. A key ingredient of the 80s were the intense hair and make-up.

Hairstyles of that time were predominantly big and wild with extreme curls, waves, puffs as well as crimps. It did not matter whether women wore their hair up or down, it was undoubtedly big and full of hairspray.
