Md Mohaiminul Islam Sifat, 21, had set out to enjoy the night with his friends on Tuesday. Five of them– most of them waiting for their university admissions– rode out in two motorcycles with plans for eating Old Dhaka's famous tehari. But it all turned upside down near Shahbagh, as Sifat's bikes ran into a road divider and were run over by a covered van at around 1.00am.

Sifat succumbed to his injuries later, while two of his friends who were on the bike with him were seriously injured.

According to police officials, the accident took place on Abdul Gani Road near Shikkha Bhaban at Shahbagh.

The covered van has been seized and its driver Masum Hossain has been arrested, said Shahbagh police station sub-inspector Mahmudul Hasan.

He said after the motorcycle hit the island, the vehicle and Sifat's two friends fell on the road divider while Sifat fell on the road and the trailer ran him over.

They were taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where the doctor on duty declared Sifat dead.

Bachchu Miah, in charge of the DMCH police camp, said the body was kept at the hospital morgue for a post-mortem examination.
