Mother and child suffer acid attack by former husband

A woman and her child sustained serious burn injuries after being attacked with acid thrown by her former husband in Mymensingh on Thursday.

Both the woman, Rupali Akter (25), and the child, Rohan (4), hailed from Trishal upazila, were admitted to the burn unit of Mymensingh Medical College Hospital with a critical condition.

The incident happened at 7 pm on Thursday in the Sarda Ghosh area of the city. The local people beat up the attacker, Hafiz Uddin, and handed him to the police.

Tanvin Parvej, an intern doctor of the hospital, said, "The child is out of danger now, but the mother's condition is still critical."

Police said Hafiz and Rupali married seven years ago. But Hafiz divorced her last year on an accusation of not getting the dowries that he demanded and married another woman.

On December 11, a local court ordered Hafiz to give Tk3 lakh 80 thousand as alimony to Rupali after the former wife filed a case against him.

However, Rupali also married another man recently.

Al Amin, additional police super of Mymensingh Sadar circle, said, "Preparation is being taken to file a case against the attacker in this incident."
