High Court adjourns hearing on Abrar’s death compensation writ

The High Court on Tuesday adjourned the hearing of a writ petition filed seeking Tk10 crore compensation over the death of Dhaka Residential Model School and College student Naimul Abrar Rahat at a Kishor Alo programme.

The bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Md Mustafizur Rahman passed the order after the initial hearing of the writ petition.

During the hearing, the bench observed that an investigation is ongoing in a case filed by the Abrar's family over his death and that the court will consider the matter of compensation after completion of the investigation process.

The court remarked the writ petition was not filed by any member of Abrar's family and that it has full confidence in the ongoing investigation process.

The bench also stated that the court will consider the matter of compensation if the victims' family files a writ.

Earlier, Supreme Court lawyer Faizullah Foyez filed a writ petition in the High Court on November 14.

On behalf of Obayed Ahmed, a former student of Dhaka Residential Model School and College, the lawyer on November 3 sent a legal notice to the editor and the publisher of the Prothom Alo and the editor of Kishor Alo, asking them to compensate the death of Abrar to his family.

The notice also requested the secretaries of information, education and power, energy and mineral resources to ensure special security measures to avoid any untoward situation during future events at educational institutions.

Lawyer Faizullah Foyez filed the writ as the respondents did not reply to the notice within the stipulated timeframe of three days.

Abrar, 15, was a non-resident ninth-grader of Dhaka Residential Model School and College. He was electrocuted to death on November 1 during an anniversary celebration of Kishor Alo – a magazine of a Bangla daily the Prothom Alo for its young readers.
