One month of Bhola incident: 13 arrested so far

A month ago on October 20, Bhola's Borhanuddin upazila turned into a battlefield as violence erupted over communal incitement.

Four people died and nearly 50 were injured as police opened fire to disperse an agitated mob. A local Hindu temple was vandalised and as many as 12 Hindu homes were ransacked as tension escalated.

Police have so far arrested 13 people, including Biplab Chandra Shuvo, the Hindu youth whose Facebook id was used to incite the violence, in three different cases.

Two other people, Sharif alias Shakil and Emon were arrested under the Digital Security Act soon after the incident. The duo allegedly hacked Shuvo's Facebook id and uploaded a post to hurt religious sentiment.

The officer-in-charge of Borhanuddin Police Station, Enamul Haque, said they arrested 10 others for vandalising a temple, ransacking homes and attacking police.

The arrested people are — Md Arif, Md Sajib, Al-Amin, Aiyub Ali Sapan, Md Hasnain, Salam Hossain, Masum Billah, Abdur Rahman, Solaiman Mamun and Kamrul Islam.

Meantime, the families of the four people who were killed got Tk5 lakh compensation each. Two separate investigations have been carried out, one by the Bhola District Administration and the other by the police, but the reports have not been submitted yet.

On November 17, Bhola Zila Muslim Oikya Parishad called on the deputy commissioner and the superintendent of police super. The 10-member team submitted a 6 demands, including cancellation of harassment cases and the release of the people arrested.

They also demanded a judicial probe over the incident. The religious leaders said that everyone has panicked because the police have filed cases against 5000 unidentified people.
