The High Court has directed not to cut down trees in Suhrawardy Udyan for the time being. 

Attorney General AM Amin Uddin has been asked to take action in this regard.

The HC bench headed by Justice Mamnoon Rahman passed the order verbally on Tuesday.

The court also fixed the next hearing of the writ on 20 May.

Advocate Minhazul Hoque Chowdhury filed the writ petition on behalf of six organisations and one individual with HC on 9 May demanding to take action against cutting down of trees in Suhrawardy Udyan.

The organisations and individuals protesting are: Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association (BELA), Association for Land Reforms and Development (ALRD), "Nijera Kori" (We Do It Ourselves), Bangladesh Legal Aid and Services Trust (BLAST), Bangladesh PoribeshAndolon (BAPA), Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK) and architect Mobasher Hossain.

Earlier on 6 May, they sent a legal notice to the concerned authorities to stop cutting down trees in the name of adorning Suhrawardy Udyan.

The notice was sent to Dhaka South City Corporation, Ministry of Housing and Public Works, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Ministry of Liberation War Affairs, Local Government Division, RAJUK, Department of Environment and Department of Public Works.
