Speakers demand Consumer Rights Protection Ministry

Speakers at an awareness raising meeting on "Safe Food and Consumer Rights Act" demanded for a separate ministry to ensure safe food and consumer rights.

They said this at the meeting organized by the West Sholoshohor ward committee of Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB) in Chattogram city on Friday.

In order to increase government institutional capability to protect consumers' rights through implementing the act, a separate ministry of consumer rights protection is needed, the speakers said.

Speakers said ensuring safe food and consumer rights protection a far cry as their sufferings are not reach the authorities concerned, including administration, in absence of a separate ministry.

With CAB 7 West Sholoshohor ward President ABM Humayun Kabir in the chair, SM Nazer Hossain, vice president of Consumers Association of Bangladesh's central committee, attended the meeting.

Regarding the spiralling price of onion, speakers alleged that a particular syndicate abnormally hiked the onion prices by stocking up the essential kitchen ingredient. But the government is yet to take any action against the syndicate.
