Progga calls for finalisation of trans-fat control regulations

On the occasion of World Health Day on 7 April, Advocacy and Research Institute Progga (Knowledge for Progress) has demanded the finalisation and implementation of the relevant regulations on the control of trans fats harmful to health.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has called for the elimination of industrial-produced trans fats from the world's food supply by 2023 to reduce the risk of heart disease and premature death.

With that goal in mind, the Bangladesh Safe Food Authority has published a draft regulation for public opinion on its website to build a transfat-free Bangladesh.

There is an opportunity to give opinions on these regulations till 5 May 2021.

Trans fatty acids (TFAs) or trans fats are harmful to health. Excessive trans-fat intake increases the risk of developing high rates of heart disease, cardiovascular death, dementia, and cognitive impairment.

According to a report published by the World Health Organization in 2020, Bangladesh is one of the 15 countries with the highest risk of dying from trans-fat heart disease.

In a response to World Health Day 2021, ABM Zubair, executive director of Progga said, "Everyone has the right to a beautiful and healthy life. We applaud the initiative of the Safe Food Authority to control trans fats. These regulations need to be finalized and implemented as soon as possible."
