Activists of Hefazat-e-Islam attacked the Chhatak police station in Sunamganj soon after their leader Mawlana Mamunul Haque was detained along with a woman at a resort in Sonargaon of Narayanganj.  

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Chhatak Police Station Sheikh Nazim Uddin confirming the matter to The Business Standard said, "Around hundreds people came to the police station around 9pm on Saturday and threw bricks at the police station."

Five policemen were injured in the incident, said the OC.

Police fired 40 rounds of tear gas and rubber bullets to control the situation.

Earlier, Hefazat-e-Islam leaders and activists staged a protest procession in Chhatak town.

Five people have been arrested over the attack, said Nazim Uddin, adding, "The detainees are being questioned and police patrols have been intensified."

Sylhet range Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Mofiz Uddin Ahmed said the situation was brought under control.

The injured policemen are- Rakib Uddin, Saidul Islam, Dilshad Mia, Rabiul Alam and Subal Das.

They were taken to Chhatak Upazila Health Complex for medical treatment.
