Bangabandhu 9th Bangladesh Games inaugurated in grand fashion

‎Bangabandhu 9th Bangladesh Games organized by Bangladesh Olympic Association (BA) was inaugurated in a grand fashion today. On Thursday, April 1, Honourable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the Games virtually from Gana Bhaban.‎

‎The games torch was lit by golfer Siddiqur Rahman and the 2016 SA Games gold-winning swimmer Mahfuja Khatun Sheela. Archer Roman Sana recited the oath on behalf of the athletes. Kamrun Nahar Hiru recited the oath on behalf of the judge and the judges.‎

‎This year's Games are being organized to mark the birth centenary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the father of the nation, and the Golden Jubilee of the country.‎

‎Speaking as the chief guest, the Prime Minister said, "My father loved sports, my younger brother was an athlete too. Athletes are ambassadors of the country to the world court. The Games are being organized on two special occasions. I hope the athletes and the concerned authority will be aware of the corona situation. '‎

‎5,300 athletes are participating in the Games in 31 disciplines. The total number of medals in 378 events is 1271.

The Bangladesh Olympic Association (BAA), the organizer of the Games, is looking to spread the event to the whole country.

The games will be held at 29 venues including 7 divisional cities.‎

‎Speaking on the occasion, BAA President and Army Chief General Aziz Ahmed said, "Bangladesh will be incomplete without Bangabandhu's name. We are proud to host these Games on the centenary of Bangabandhu and the golden jubilee of the country. '‎

Minister of State for Youth and Sports, Zahid Ahsan Russell, said, "Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was not only an organizer but also an athlete. Honourable Prime Minister, under your leadership, we are taking our sports forward. '‎

The Bangladesh Olympic Association (BOA) today launched the official website of the Bangabandhu 9th Bangladesh Games as well.

BOA secretary general Syed Shahed Reza formally inaugurated the website at the media cell of the BOA building this afternoon.

‎The budget for the Bangabandhu 9th Bangladesh Games was estimated at BDT 38 crores. But it has been reduced to BDT 20 crores. BOA is getting BDT 15 crores from the government.
