Bangladesh makes progress against child mortality, malnutrition

Bangladesh has achieved unprecedented success in preventing child mortality, reducing malnutrition, alleviating hunger and poverty, said Bangladesh House Building Finance Corporation Chairman Professor Dr Md Salim Uddin

Salim Uddin, also the chairman of Executive Committee of Islami Bank Bangladesh Limited, said this while presenting a keynote paper at a webinar titled 'SDG-2 Zero Hunger' organized by SDG Youth Forum, read a press release. 

He said in his paper that it is necessary to ensure the availability of modern equipment in the expansion of a sustainable agricultural system ensuring food security. Bangladesh needs to emphasise on achieving the desired goals of SDGs like other countries, he added.

In the context of Bangladesh, the results of the indicators of hunger eradication are not at the expected level, he said. According to the World Food Programme's 2019 statistics, 30.50% of the people in Bangladesh are suffering from food insecurity. In addition, children around the world are the most affected by food insecurity. However, Bangladesh has achieved unprecedented success in preventing child mortality, reducing malnutrition, alleviating hunger and poverty, he added.

Professor Dr MA Gafur, former chairman of the Department of Botany at the University of Chittagong addressed the webinar as the main speaker. 

Noman Ullah Bahar, president of the forum presided over the programme while Minhazur Rahman Shihab, Office Secretary hosted over the webinar and Ashik Sayem gave a welcome speech. 

Environmentalist Professor Dr Muhammad Edris Ali; SM Nazer Hossain, vice president at Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB); Mahbub Rana, senior vice president at Bangladesh Non Packer Frozen Fish Exporters Association; Anisul Mostafa, project director of Online Agriculture and Rural Loan Project; Dr Sharin Shahjahan Naomi, assistant professor of Asian University for Women; Muhammad Ibrar, CEO of Community Management Development Program of Pakistan; Sagar Koirala, Ambassador of Real Food System Program of Nepal; Md Abdul Farooq, banker; Md Touhidul Islam, member of Social Organization Krisher Bazar took part in the webinar.
