Saaol Heart Center, Bangladesh has helped more than 40,000 heart patients in the country lead a healthy life – without undergoing operations – in the last 12 years, said poet Mohon Raihan, founder of the organisation.

He was addressing a discussion at its headquarters in the capital on the occasion of "Saaol's Successful 12 Years in Heart Treatment without any Ring and Operation" on Saturday.

Health Ministry Secretary Abdul Mannan, as chief guest, said, "Saaol is not just providing medical treatment. Everyone should work for Saaol for it to become a social movement. If it can be associated with the government's initiatives, people will benefit."

He said as the number of heart patients increases day by day, it is important to make people aware of this disease and take the initiative to prevent this disease. Saaol has been doing so for a long time.

The health secretary also said in 1972, there were about 7,500 doctors in the country. Now this number has increased several times. There are 610 government hospitals, over 14,000 community clinics and about 30,000 maternal and child health centers in the country.

There are about 200 pharmaceutical companies, and about 40 of them export medicine abroad who earn about $150 million annually. However, Bangladeshis are spending over $200 million annually on treatment in India, Singapore and Bangkok, he added.

With the slogan "Raise awareness, not panic – cure heart disease without surgery," the organisation is marking the day.

On the occasion of 12-year completion, doctors of its Dhaka branch will provide free-medical consultations for three days, starting on 9 January.

There are two branches of Saaol in Bangladesh while another will be launched in Sylhet on 23 January. There are 99 branches of Saaol around the world.

Poet Mohon Raihan said, "Introducing the Saaol Treatment Method in Bangladesh and making it acceptable here was a big challenge. It is our achievement that we have been able to convince patients about the treatment of heart disease without surgery."

Educator Dr Salimullah Khan, cultural personality M Hamid, former MP Nurul Islam Moni, and Daily Amader Notun Shomoy Editor Nayeemul Islam Khan also spoke at the occasion.
