High Court orders probe against SI

The High Court has directed the authorities to probe the then sub-Inspector of Darussalam Police Station (currently working at Uttara West Police Station) Mohammad Raihanuzzaman over phone conversation with the accused before arresting him in a drug case.

The commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police has been directed to carry out the investigation and submit a report to the court within a month.

The High Court bench of Justice Jahangir Hossain and Justice Mohammad Badruzzaman passed the order on Thursday while hearing the bail application of the accused.

The court has fixed 9 March for the next order.

Lawyer Moniruzzaman Rana appeared for accused Sohag in the court. Deputy Attorney General Dr Mohammad Bashir Ullah represented the state.

Deputy Attorney General Dr Mohammad Bashir Ullah said a case was registered against a bus manager named Miraj Hawlader alias Sohag on 9 June 2018 over seizing heroin and 21 pieces of yaba pills.

Sohag appealed to the High Court after he was denied bail in the trial court in the case.

During the hearing of the application, the accused submitted a call list to the court claiming that SI Raihan spoke on the phone before arresting Sohag.

The court later summoned the SI to explain the incident.

SI Raihanuzzaman appeared in the court on Thursday and sought an unconditional apology, saying the accused Sohag acted as his source.

Sohag used to give him information about drugs in different places. He used to talk about it.

Bashir Ullah said the court later ordered an inquiry into the matter.

He added that on 3 December, the High Court granted bail to Sohag till 7 January. It has been extended for another three months.
