RMG workers demand one-year arrears from A-One BD Limited

The National Garment Workers' Federation has demanded the salaries and allowance of 1,100 workers in A-One BD Limited that remain in arrears for one year.

The RMG workers' platform also sought to reopen the Italian ready-made garment factory at Dhaka Export Processing Zone including presenting a four-point demand.

The president of the organisation, Amirul Haque Amin, said this at a press conference held at Zahur Hossain Chowdhury Hall in the National Press Club on Tuesday.

In his address, Amirul said: "To realise the demand, a memorandum will be presented to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on 18 January."

The labour leader sought PM intervention in reopening A-One BD Limited and in the payment of arrears for the workers.

"The factory was closed on 18 April 2020 without paying the salaries and allowance of about 1,100 workers which is a violation of the Bangladesh Labor Act."

He said the Bangladesh Export Processing Zones Authority (Bepza), the Department of Factories and all concerned were informed about this but no avail.

The four-point demand of RMG workers include taking action so the factory owner cannot flee the country, reopening the factory and making arrangements for legal compensation, ensuring jobs of 1,100 workers at the factory by meeting their salaries and allowance that remain in arrears and providing the workers with their provident fund.

Arifa Akhter, general secretary of the National Garment Workers Federation, Rafiqul Islam Rafiq, organising secretary, Faridul Islam, joint secretary, among others, were present at the press conference.
