It starts with the rendition of Louis Armstrong's 'What a wonderful world' as Downey Jr embarks on an adventure to save the young queen of England.

According to the film's synopsis, after losing his wife, the eccentric Dr John Dolittle (Downey), famed doctor and veterinarian of Queen Victoria's England, hides himself behind the high walls of the Dolittle manor with only his pack of exotic animals for company.

However, when the young queen (Jessie Buckley) falls gravely ill, a reluctant Dolittle is forced to set sail on an epic adventure to a mythical island in search of a cure during which he regains his wit and courage.

He encounters a host of animals, including a ferocious tiger who calls him "lunch," backed up by his bands of fury friends  — a gorilla, an ostrich and an octopus, to name a few.

'Chernobyl' and 'Wild Rose' star Jessie Buckley and Harry Collett (Dunkirk) acts as Dolittle's apprentice. Academy Award winner Rami Malek did voice over as the gorilla, Octavia Spencer as the duck, Kumail Nanjiani as the ostrich, and John Cena as a very happy polar bear. Emma Thompson did voice over for the parrot who serves as Dolittle's closest confidante.

The film also stars Antonio Banderas, Michael Sheen, and Jim Broadbent, with additional voice performances from Marion Cotillard, Frances de la Tour, Carmen Ejogo, Ralph Fiennes, Selena Gomez, Tom Holland, and Craig Robinson.

The film is set to release in theatres on January 17, 2020.
