The government has been providing scholarships worth around Tk10.5 lakh to 1,803 meritorious children of tea workers across the country.

DR AKM Rafiqul Haque, director (in-charge) of the Project Development Unit of Bangladesh Tea Board (BTB), made the announcement at a ceremony to distribute scholarship cheques at Rajghat Tea Garden in Sreemangal upazila of Moulvibazar on Thursday.

According to the BTB, the government provides the "Sikkha Britty 2020 (Education Scholarship 2020)" to encourage children's education and improve the quality of the learning environment.

DR AKM Rafiqul Haque, who attended the cheque distribution ceremony as the chief guest, told The Business Standard that the scholarships had been given since 2001.

He said the relevant authorities concerned disbursed the scholarships after reviewing the 2019 test results of workers' children in 92 tea gardens. Scholarship recipients ranged from students of Grades II to VIII.

The scholarship cheques have already been distributed in those gardens, he added.

With the establishment of the "Bangladesh Tea Garden Workers' Education Trust" in 2001 to develop the quality of education of the children of tea garden workers, more than 24,000 scholarships have been distributed so far.

In addition, the trust has also set up nongovernment school buildings, latrines, flag posts, arranged training courses for teachers, and distributed educational material and sports equipment.
