Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA) – the professional body of medical doctors – has demanded immediate and unconditional release of Dr Abdullah Al Mamun, registrar of National Mental Health Institute and Hospital (NIMH).

BMA President Dr Mustafa Jalal Mohiuddin and Secretary General Dr Ehteshamul Huq made the demand in a statement on Wednesday.

According to the statement, Mamun was arrested in a case over the death of senior ASP Anisul Karim at a private mental health centre in Dhaka a few days ago.

"The BMA is strongly condemning the arrest of Abdullah Al Mamun by DB police from his official residence on 18 November," the release said.

The statement also noted senior ASP Anisul Karim did not die in the NIMH and no doctor of the institution was involved in this incident. Moreover, Mamun did not even see the patient in the private hospital where the latter was admitted.

"Arresting Dr Abdullah Al Mamun in this case and putting him on remand is illogical, unjust and harassing. Arresting a medical official without the permission of the right authorities in such a way has angered all doctors across the country," the statement added.

If government medical officials are continued to be arrested on the basis of completely fictitious allegations without a court order, the normal health system may be disrupted, it warned.
