The 2026 Nobel Prize in Physics has been awarded to Francis Halzen for "decisive contributions to the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and the discovery of high-energy neutrinos of astrophysical origin". He recognised that Antarctic ice could detect neutrinos, leading to the development of IceCube, a cubic-kilometre observatory equipped with light sensors to detect neutrinos from highly energetic processes in the distant universe.
