US–Myanmar talks raise questions over rare earth minerals and China's influence
The United States is re-engaging with Myanmar's military leader, Min Aung Hlaing, raising questions about Washington's foreign policy under Donald Trump. The renewed diplomatic contacts come amid discussions over detained American citizen Adam Castillo, Myanmar's rare earth mineral reserves, and China's influence in the region.
Despite increased engagement, US sanctions against Min Aung Hlaing remain in place. Meanwhile, cuts to American aid and the revocation of Temporary Protected Status for 4,000 Burmese nationals have raised further concerns. Analysts warn that accessing Myanmar's rare earth minerals and challenging China's influence could prove difficult.
