Actor Somu Chowdhury injured in attack over garbage disposal in Jashore, 1 arrested
Somu Chowdhury filed a case against two people, with police arresting one accused, Jahangir Talukder, 36.
Actor Somu Chowdhury was allegedly assaulted by a motorcycle garage owner and a mechanic in Jashore city today (13 October) over a dispute concerning garbage disposal and cleanliness.
He sustained head injuries that required three stitches. He was taken to a hospital in a bloodied condition and is now recovering at home after receiving initial treatment.
Somu Chowdhury later filed a case with Jashore Kotwali Police Station, naming two people as accused. Police have arrested one of them, identified as Jahangir Talukder, 36.
The incident took place around 12:30pm in the Bejpara Naldanga Road area near Notun Bazar, in front of the actor's house.
Somu Chowdhury said he was walking in front of his house when an argument broke out with Jahangir, a mechanic at a nearby motorcycle garage, over keeping the area clean.
At one stage, garage owner Hridoy and Jahangir allegedly struck him on the head with a brick, leaving him injured.
Locals rescued the actor and took him to the emergency department of Jashore General Hospital, where he received three stitches to his head. After receiving treatment, he returned home around 1:20pm.
Expressing shock over the incident, Somu said he had good relations with people in the area and had wanted to keep the surroundings clean, but his efforts had caused problems for some people.
He said he was considering filing an attempted murder case over the attack.
Hridoy denied involvement, saying he was not present at the scene when the incident occurred. However, he said Jahangir had told him over the phone that he attacked the actor after an argument involving insults directed at his mother and sister.
The incident drew condemnation from cultural figures and local residents, who called for a proper investigation and legal action against those responsible.
Kabir Hossain, officer-in-charge of Jashore Kotwali Model Police Station, said a police team had visited the scene and was conducting operations to detain those allegedly involved.
Police would take legal action following an investigation, he added.
