2 crude bombs explode outside ICT office in Dhanmondi; police say man was hired for Tk50,000
Police say the arrestee had scouted the area two days earlier and was caught while trying to flee after setting off the blasts in the early hours of today.
A 23-year-old man was arrested after two crude bombs were set off outside the International Crimes Tribunal's investigation agency office in the capital's Dhanmondi early today (30 September), with police saying he was offered Tk 50,000 to carry out the attack.
The arrested man, Rezaul Islam, was detained by a team from Dhanmondi Model Police Station after allegedly setting off the crude bombs and trying to flee through a lane, according to police.
Akhtar Hossain, deputy commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (Media), confirmed the matter to The Business Standard.
Police said the two crude bombs were detonated on a paved road in front of a house on Dhanmondi 11/A Road at around 12:30am. The ICT investigation agency office is located on the same road.
According to police, Rezaul told them during preliminary questioning that an unidentified man approached him at a tea stall in the New Market area 10 to 12 days ago and offered him Tk 50,000 to set off crude bombs in front of the International Crimes Tribunal's office.
Police said Rezaul agreed to the proposal and visited the area on 28 September to scout the location.
He then reportedly went to the area around midnight and detonated the two crude bombs.
After the blasts, he allegedly tried to escape through a lane, but police caught him.
No one was injured in the incident. Police recovered fragments of the exploded crude bombs from the scene.
Police have not yet identified the person who allegedly offered Rezaul Tk 50,000 to carry out the attack.
Police also said they are verifying the information Rezaul provided and investigating to identify and arrest others involved in the incident.
The DMP said legal proceedings against Rezaul are underway.
