BGMEA expresses grief over Ashulia factory blast, announces support measures

The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has expressed deep shock and grief over the gas cylinder explosion and subsequent fire at a factory of Pretty Group in Jamgara area of Ashulia, Savar, yesterday (20 September) evening.
In a press release issued today (21 September), BGMEA conveyed condolences to the families of those killed in the accident and prayed for the salvation of the departed souls. It also wished a speedy and full recovery for those who sustained burn injuries and other injuries in the incident.
BGMEA President Mahmud Hasan Khan said, "Standing beside the injured people and affected families is our first and foremost priority at this moment of crisis."

Soon after receiving the news of the accident, a BGMEA crisis response team and a delegation visited the scene and provided overall assistance to the Fire Service and Civil Defence in the rescue operation, the release said.
According to BGMEA, no regular garment worker was injured in the accident.
The association has taken several measures following the incident.
A BGMEA medical team is monitoring the treatment of the injured and burn victims admitted to the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital and local hospitals, the release said. BGMEA is also coordinating closely with Pretty Group authorities regarding necessary medicines and medical treatment.
The BGMEA is also forming a high-level investigation committee to determine the actual cause of the accident and examine safety deficiencies related to the unloading of cylinders or gas tankers, with a view to preventing similar incidents in the future.
Besides, BGMEA said it would issue an emergency circular to all garment factories across the country, directing them to strictly follow the highest safety protocols while unloading, handling and storing chemicals, gas cylinders and flammable materials.
"BGMEA firmly believes that protecting workers' lives and ensuring overall workplace safety remain among its top priorities following any industrial accident," the release said.
The organisation also expressed gratitude to the relevant government departments, Fire Service and Civil Defence, and local administration for their prompt response and rescue efforts.
