Writ filed seeking HC ban on romance-based films, dramas

A lawyer has filed a petition with the High Court seeking a ban on the production and broadcast of films and dramas based on love and romance, arguing that such content could have a harmful impact on youths and society

Advocate Md Mahmudul Hasan Mamun filed the writ petition today (13 September) at the relevant branch of the High Court.

The cabinet secretary, secretaries of the Information and Broadcasting Ministry and Cultural Affairs Ministry, and chairman of the Bangladesh Film Certification Board have been made respondents.

In the petition, Mamun said excessive romantic content in mainstream films and dramas was contributing to the moral degradation of young people, social disorder and distraction from studies and careers.

He alleged that some films and dramas portray extramarital affairs, adultery and rape as normal or glamorous, creating negative effects on youths and society.

The petition cited reports by international media outlets, including Hindustan Times, Daily Sabah and The New York Times, in support of claims that unrestricted romantic and provocative content can affect young people's psychological development and contribute to violence and crime against women.

Mamun also argued that freedom of speech and expression under Article 39 of the Constitution is subject to reasonable restrictions in the interests of decency and morality.

The writ further seeks mandatory directions for the production and broadcast of films and dramas based on science, education, history, the Liberation War and national defence to encourage creativity and patriotism among young people.

Mamun had earlier sent a legal notice to the respondents on 27 August, seeking action on the issue. He said he filed the writ in the public interest after receiving no response or effective administrative action following the notice.

The lawyer had drawn widespread discussion and criticism on social media after sending the legal notice.
