Right people,wrong time: Why La la land still lingers 

Perhaps it is because La la land has never really been about getting the ending we want. Beneath its jazz clubs, sweeping choreography and Old Hollywood glow is a more uncomfortable story about what happens when the life we want begins to pull against the person we love. Mia and Sebastian dream loudly, love deeply and eventually discover that wanting the same future does not necessarily mean wanting it in the same way.

That tension is what makes the film linger. Its questions have little to do with Los Angeles or Hollywood and everything to do with the choices that follow us into adulthood: How much are we willing to sacrifice for a dream? Can two people be right for each other and still arrive at the wrong moment? And what happens to the versions of our lives we once imagined but never got to live?

Perhaps its staying power lies in the fact that the film itself has not changed. We have.

The Price of a Dream

Dreams are easy to romanticise when they're still somewhere in the distance. La la land is more interested in what happens once they start becoming real.

Mia spends years auditioning for roles that barely seem to notice her. Sebastian plays music that isn't his own because paying the bills comes before playing the music he actually believes in. Both are talented, both are stubborn, and neither is willing to let go of the future they have imagined for themselves. Yet the closer they get to those dreams, the more complicated the question becomes: what are you willing to give up to get there?

Most of us will never be trying to open a jazz club or land a Hollywood role. But we know what it means to want something badly enough to rearrange our lives around it. We choose a degree because it seems like the right future. We take a job we don't love because it gets us closer to somewhere we want to be. Sometimes the dream works out. Sometimes it doesn't. And sometimes it works out differently from what we imagined.

Right People, Wrong Time

There is a particular kind of heartbreak in realising that someone can be right for you and still not be right for the life you're building. But La La Land lives in the uncomfortable space between those answers.

Sometimes, there is no villain. There is only timing.

Mia and Sebastian don't fall apart because they stop loving each other. Sebastian believes in Mia when she is struggling to believe in herself; Mia pushes Sebastian towards the music and independence he has been dreaming about. But eventually, those dreams begin asking more of them. The lives they once imagined building together begin to separate, not because either of them deliberately chooses to hurt the other, but because pursuing their individual futures requires choices that slowly make a shared future harder to sustain.

There are relationships that end without betrayal, without cruelty and without anyone falling out of love. They end because life starts moving in a direction that two people cannot move in together. Sometimes love can be real, important and transformative and still not be enough to make two lives fit.

And maybe that's the part we understand most as we get older: not every person who changes your life is meant to stay in it.

Why We Keep Coming Back

There is something almost cruel about the final moments of La la land. For a few minutes, the film gives us something neither of them ever gets in reality: another version of their story. They stay together. The dreams work out. It is everything the audience might have wanted for them, and precisely because we are shown it, we are forced to confront the life they chose not to live.

We usually think of nostalgia as longing for the past. But La la land taps into something stranger: longing for a future that never arrived. And then the film takes that possibility away.

Neither character is miserable with the life they eventually chose. Mia has become the actress she wanted to be. Sebastian has built the jazz club he dreamed of. The film doesn't tell us that they made the wrong choice. It tells us that even the right choice can come with a sense of loss.

We can watch it at 18 and see a sweeping romance. We can return to it after a failed relationship, a career change, a move to a new city or a dream that didn't quite work out, and suddenly a scene that once seemed romantic can feel painfully familiar.

The film stays the same. We don't.

Maybe La la land lingers because it refuses to give us easy answers. It allows both possibilities to exist,  the life they lived and the life they might have lived and asks us to sit with the ache of knowing that choosing one means losing the other.

Some films are remembered because they were important at the time. La la land has lasted because, each time we return to it, it seems to find a different part of us waiting there.

Some films fade. La la land lingers.
