Uttam Kumar birth centenary: West Bengal plans new film centre, heritage walks
Secretary of West Bengal Information and Cultural Affairs Saumitra Mohan told reporters in Kolkata that the state government has sought three acres in New Town to set up the film center.
The West Bengal government has planned a series of programmes, including a special commemorative postage stamp, nostalgic heritage walks at different locations in Kolkata, and a new film center, to mark the birth centenary of screen legend Uttam Kumar.
Officials said the decisions were taken at a preparatory meeting chaired by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari at Nandan in Kolkata yesterday (13 August).

"We plan to set up an Uttam Kumar Film Centre, like Nandan (Kolkata), in New Town. Uttam Mancha, which is dilapidated and will be renovated," he said.
The Uttam Kumar Birth Centenary Film Centre in New Town near Kolkata, where film and cultural events will be organised and modern facilities will be made available.
The main centenary programme will be held from 3 September, the day the actor was born, to 6 to commemorate the actor's contribution to Bengali cinema.
"The state government has decided to celebrate the centenary of the legendary actor all through the year. This will include nostalgic heritage walks at different locations in Kolkata associated with Uttam Kumar, a midnight cake-cutting ceremony on his birthday, and open-air tributes featuring selected films of the actor," he said.
An exhibition on his life, acting career, and contribution to Bengali cinema is also being planned," officials said.
