Rangamati journalist arrested under Pornography Control Act
DB says the journalist circulated a manipulated image of an Indigenous woman; the journalist says he received the image from another source.
Rangamati Journalist Union General Secretary and DBC Television's district correspondent Saikat Ranjan Chowdhury was arrested today (11 August) in a case filed under the Pornography Control Act, 2012.
A team of Detective Branch (DB) arrested Ranjan in front of the Rangamati District Council gate around 2:30pm, said Md Shafiqul Islam, additional commissioner and chief of DB.
Speaking to The Business Standard, the DB chief said that an Indigenous woman filed a case against Ranjan with Shahbagh Police Station under the Pornography Control Act.
"A local received a manipulated image in which the woman's face had been superimposed on another body. After we arrested him [the local], he told us that Ranjan had sent him the image. But Ranjan claims that he received the image from somewhere else," he added.
The DB chief said the suspects' mobile phones could not be forensically examined in Rangamati, so they arrested him and brought him to Dhaka for further investigation.
He also said that even if Ranjan did not create the image himself, he could not share or distribute it.
Ranjan is currently in DB custody and is being questioned, Shafiqul said.
