Two sentenced to death for raping housewife in Jamalpur
The tribunal also fined each convict tk 1 lakh in the case.
A tribunal in Jamalpur today (10 August) sentenced two individuals to death for raping a housewife in Dewanganj upazila in 2022.
Judge of the Jamalpur Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Muhammad Abdur Rahim delivered the judgement.
The condemned convicts are Ashkar Ali, 44, son of Mobarak Ali, and Zahidul Islam, 39, son of Asmat Ali of the upazila. The court also fined them Tk 1 lakh each.
According to the prosecution, the victim's husband and son lived in Dhaka for work, while she stayed at their village home with her 10-year-old daughter.
Taking advantage of the situation, Ashkar allegedly harassed the woman. However, she rejected his advances.
Later, he allegedly took her photographs, edited them to create obscene images and violated the woman after threatening to circulate them on the internet.
The prosecution also said Ashkar threatened to kill the victim's daughter, son and husband if she spoke about the abuse.
On March 1, 2022, Ashkar and Zahidul allegedly entered the victim's house when her husband was away and raped her against her will, threatening to kill her daughter.
At one stage, the victim's husband returned home and raised an alarm after finding the accused in the house. The prosecution said the accused then assaulted and threatened the victim and another man who came to the scene, and took obscene photographs of them using a mobile phone.
Later, the victim's son filed a case at the Jamalpur Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-1.
