Presidential polls: BNP collects 2 nomination forms
Last Thursday, the EC announced the schedule, fixing 20 August for the presidential election.
The ruling BNP has collected two nomination papers from the Returning Officer's Office at the Election Commission (EC) for the upcoming presidential election.
Chief Whip of the National Parliament Nurul Islam Moni and BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi collected the nomination forms from the EC headquarters in Dhaka's Agargaon today (9 August).
Earlier, last Thursday, the EC announced the schedule, fixing 20 August for the presidential election. Nomination papers must be submitted by 13 August, Election Commission Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed said.
Akhtar said the schedule was announced following consultations between the chief election commissioner and the acting speaker, in line with Section 5(3) of the President Election Act, 1991. The electoral process will be conducted at the parliament and the EC headquarters.
According to the announced timeline, nomination papers can be submitted from 10am to 4pm on 13 August at the returning officer's office. Scrutiny of nomination papers will take place on 16 August starting at 10am, and the deadline for withdrawing candidatures is 4pm on 18 August. Voting will be held from 2pm to 5pm on 20 August at the parliament.
Akhtar said that the voter list for the presidential election has already been prepared. Following the announcement of the schedule, the EC's subsequent administrative activities will be carried out accordingly.
He added that, for now, only the election schedule has been released. Updated information and developments will subsequently be formally communicated to the media, the secretary said.
