Govt dismisses fuel import policy reports as ‘speculative and false’
The power and energy ministry says the proposed framework aims to strengthen energy security and create a more transparent and competitive fuel market.
The government has dismissed recent media reports and social media discussions about the proposed private-sector fuel import policy as "speculative and false", saying they have created unnecessary confusion.
In a statement issued today (8 August), the Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry said it is preparing a draft policy titled "Policy on Import, Storage, Transportation, Distribution and Marketing of Refined Fuel at the Private Sector Level, 2026". The statement was signed by Muhammad Arif Sadek, deputy chief information officer of the ministry.
The proposed policy aims to ensure an uninterrupted and secure fuel supply while strengthening the country's energy security and creating a more transparent and competitive fuel market, the ministry said.

It added that opinions and recommendations from energy sector stakeholders would be considered before the policy is finalised.
"The policy will only be considered if public interest, energy security, a competitive market, transparency and accountability can be ensured," the statement said.
The ministry also rejected speculation that the proposed framework would be formulated to benefit any particular individual, company or group.
"There is no scope to provide any special benefit to any particular individual, institution or group through this policy," it said.
