International summit on diabetes prevention held in Dhaka
The event brought together policymakers, health experts, researchers and faith leaders to strengthen global efforts to prevent non-communicable diseases.
The International Prevention Summit (IPS) 2026 was held in Dhaka today (6 August) with the aim of strengthening global efforts to prevent diabetes.
Organisers brought together policymakers, health experts, researchers, development partners and faith leaders from various countries under the theme 'Faith-Based Diabetes Prevention.'
The summit participants emphasised strengthening international cooperation in evidence-based diabetes prevention, raising public awareness and expanding preventive healthcare initiatives through religious and social values.
Speakers noted that healthcare services alone cannot prevent non-communicable diseases like diabetes. They stressed that healthcare systems must integrate healthy lifestyles, balanced dietary habits, physical activity, and public awareness with social and faith-based values.
They further highlighted that coordinated efforts among governments, healthcare institutions, researchers, development partners and religious and community leaders can significantly reduce the growing global burden of diabetes.
Representatives from World Health Organization (WHO), Jica, OIC-Comstech, Bangladesh Diabetic Association (Badas) and other national and international partner organisations also participated.
The organisers unveiled the "Dhaka Declaration on Faith-Based Diabetes Prevention" as a key highlight of the event.
The declaration highlights how engaging religious institutions, faith leaders and local communities alongside conventional health initiatives can strengthen diabetes prevention efforts. The organisers noted that the summit discussions and the Dhaka Declaration will form an important foundation for shaping future diabetes prevention policies and initiatives.
