Retired army personnel arrested in Tonu murder case released on bail
Hafizur walked free at 7:05pm after the jail authorities received the High Court’s bail order and completed the necessary formalities.
Retired army personnel Hafizur Rahman, the sole accused arrested in the murder case of college student Sohagi Jahan Tonu, was released from Cumilla Central Jail today (4 August) after securing bail from the High Court.
Cumilla Central Jail Senior Jail Superintendent Md Shah Alam Khan confirmed the release, saying Hafizur walked free at 7:05pm after the jail authorities received the High Court's bail order and completed the necessary formalities.
On Sunday, a High Court bench comprising Justice Zakir Ahmed and Justice Sathika Hossain granted him bail.
The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) arrested Hafizur from his home in Keraniganj, Dhaka, on 22 April, more than a decade after Tonu's murder. The following day, a Cumilla court granted the PBI a three-day remand for interrogation, against its plea for seven days.

Investigation sources said Hafizur's DNA sample was collected after his arrest and sent for forensic testing. The DNA report has since been submitted to the court.
Tonu went missing on 20 March 2016 after travelling to a residence inside Cumilla Cantonment to tutor a student. Her body was later found in bushes near the cantonment's power house.
