Can premium bottled water become mainstream in Bangladesh?
As consumers become increasingly health-conscious, premium bottled water is emerging as a niche market. However, the idea remains a difficult sell in a country where millions lack access to safe drinking water and price sensitivity shapes purchasing decisions
On a humid afternoon at a five-star hotel in Dhaka, a waiter places a sleek black bottle of water beside a carefully plated meal. A few tables away, another guest asks specifically for alkaline water instead of regular bottled water.
Not long ago, such requests would have seemed unusual in Bangladesh, where bottled water was simply a necessity, a product bought for convenience or safety. Today, for a growing segment of consumers, water has become part of a broader conversation about health, wellness and lifestyle.
Bangladesh's bottled water industry has long been dominated by familiar names such as Mum, Kinley, Fresh, Spa, Aquafina and Pran Drinking Water—brands that built their reputations on safety, accessibility and affordability. But as the country's middle- and upper-middle-income consumers become increasingly health-conscious, a small premium segment is beginning to emerge, offering products that promise more than just basic hydration.
Take the case of Sakura, one of the companies seeking to redefine the category. It has positioned itself as Bangladesh's first alkaline and black water brand. Rather than competing in the crowded mass-market segment, the company is betting that a growing number of consumers are willing to pay a premium for products they associate with wellness and a more premium lifestyle.

"Premium water is not about luxury for the sake of luxury," says the company's Managing Director Nesar Hossain. "It is about superior hydration presented with care and sophistication. Since nearly 70% of the human body is made up of water, what we consume every day matters."
The strategy reflects a broader global trend where consumers increasingly seek functional foods and beverages—products that promise added health benefits beyond their traditional purpose. In many international markets, alkaline water, electrolyte-enhanced water and mineral-rich beverages have become part of the wellness economy, particularly among fitness enthusiasts and health-conscious consumers.

According to Hossain, changing consumer preferences have encouraged the company to expand beyond conventional bottled water. This year, it introduced what it describes as Bangladesh's first black water, infused with more than 77 essential and trace minerals, targeting consumers looking for differentiated hydration products.
"We see consumers becoming much more informed," he says. "They are paying closer attention to what they eat and drink, and they are looking for products that complement a healthier lifestyle."
While the science behind some premium water claims continues to be debated internationally, there is little doubt that consumer behaviour is changing. Across Bangladesh's retail shelves, supermarket aisles and online grocery platforms, premium packaging, imported beverages and wellness-focused products are receiving greater visibility than they did a decade ago.
Packaging itself has become part of the value proposition.
In the premium bottled water business, appearance often shapes first impressions. Distinctive bottle designs, BPA-free packaging and minimalist branding are increasingly used to communicate quality before a customer even opens the cap.
Sakura says it deliberately invested in unique bottle designs and paper cartons to create what it describes as a complete consumer experience.
"Today's consumers want products that are both beneficial and enjoyable," the Deputy General Manager of Sakura's marketing and sales department noted. "Presentation has become increasingly important because it reflects the care and quality behind the product."
That philosophy mirrors developments in international hospitality, where premium bottled water has become almost as carefully selected as wine lists or specialty coffee. Bangladesh's luxury hotels, fine-dining restaurants and premium corporate spaces are beginning to adopt similar practices.
Demand from five-star hotels, upscale restaurants and corporate clients has grown steadily over the past few years as businesses seek to enhance guest experiences. Sakura says its products are served by several luxury hospitality establishments and international airline Emirates.
For hospitality operators, the bottle on a dining table serves as another expression of brand identity. For consumers, it becomes part of the overall experience rather than merely a source of drinking water.
Still, the idea of "luxury water" remains a difficult sell in a country where millions continue to struggle for access to safe drinking water and price sensitivity shapes most purchasing decisions.
Industry observers note that the premium segment is likely to remain a niche rather than replace conventional bottled water anytime soon. Mass-market brands will continue to dominate because affordability, availability and trust remain the primary drivers for most consumers.
For example, among Sakura's latest products is Black Water, a category that remains relatively new in Bangladesh. Its dark colour comes from naturally occurring fulvic minerals, rather than artificial colouring, and the company says it contains more than 77 essential and trace minerals along with electrolytes and antioxidants. Marketed as a functional hydration drink for health-conscious consumers, it targets a niche audience willing to pay for wellness-focused products.
A 500ml black water bottle is priced at around Tk135, while a 500ml bottle of regular water costs only Tk20. The significant price difference places it firmly in the premium segment.
Sakura acknowledges that scepticism is natural.
"When we first introduced alkaline water, many people questioned the concept," the executive recalls. "Over time, as consumers experienced the product themselves, we saw acceptance grow. We believe innovation and consistent quality ultimately speak louder than marketing."
Whether premium bottled water becomes a mainstream category in Bangladesh remains to be seen. But its emergence signals something larger than a new product launch. It reflects changing lifestyles, rising disposable incomes among a segment of consumers, and a market influenced by global wellness trends.
For decades, bottled water in Bangladesh answered one simple question: Is it safe to drink? Today, another question is being asked alongside it: What experience does it offer?
For premium brands like Sakura, that shift represents an opportunity to transform one of life's most ordinary essentials into a lifestyle product. Whether enough consumers are willing to embrace that idea will determine how large Bangladesh's premium water market ultimately becomes.
