BNP leader accused of biting trader's ear, ordering him to leave area in Narsingdi
The incident reportedly took place yesterday evening in front of Bangladesh Jute Mills in Ghorashal.
A sand trader in Narsingdi's Palash upazila has alleged that a local BNP leader forcibly took him to his house, assaulted him and bit his ear before threatening him to leave the area, reports Prothom Alo.
The incident allegedly took place yesterday evening (13 July) in front of Bangladesh Jute Mills in Ghorashal.
The accused, Mohiuddin Chishtia, is the joint general secretary of Ghorashal Municipality BNP.
The victim, Sakhawat Hossain, 48, of Kaliganj in neighbouring Gazipur district, is undergoing treatment at Palash Upazila Health Complex.
Abdullah Al Mamun, residential medical officer at the hospital, confirmed to Prothom Alo that Sakhawat was admitted with a serious ear injury.
"Four stitches were required on the patient's ear after he arrived on Monday evening. He is currently under observation," he said.
According to Sakhawat, he had installed a dredger in the Shitalakshya River to supply sand for land-filling work at a TK Group construction project inside Bangladesh Jute Mills.
He said that after paying wages to dredger workers yesterday afternoon, four men on two motorcycles stopped him in front of the jute mill and forcibly took him to Mohiuddin's house.
There, he alleged, Mohiuddin and another six to seven people kept him confined for about an hour and assaulted him by punching and slapping him.
Sakhawat claimed that Mohiuddin questioned why he had installed the dredger without informing him. Before he could respond, Mohiuddin allegedly grabbed him by the throat and bit his ear.
While he was bleeding, he was allegedly threatened and told to remove the dredger and leave the area. He said he was released only after agreeing to remove the dredger, and local residents later took him to hospital.
When contacted, Mohiuddin Chishtia declined to comment in detail, saying, "I am busy with a programme involving Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan. I will give a detailed statement later through a video message."
Palash Police Station Officer-in-Charge Shahed Al-Mamun said police visited the hospital after learning of the incident and spoke to the victim.
He said legal action would be taken if a written complaint is filed.
