Man killed after altercation over Argentina-Egypt World Cup match in Cumilla
After Argentina conceded, Shariful allegedly mocked the team's supporters, sparking an argument that escalated into an assault by several Argentina fans.
A 32-year-old man was killed in Cumilla after reportedly becoming ill following a physical altercation that stemmed from an argument over Argentina-Egypt FIFA World Cup match.
The deceased was identified as Md Shariful Islam, from Nilphamari's Jaldhaka upazila. He had been living in a rented house in Cumilla city.
The incident took place around 10:50pm yesterday (7 July) in the Dhanpur area under Durgapur union of Adarsha Sadar upazila, confirmed Shankar Kumar Das, acting in-charge of the Cantonment Police Outpost.
According to police, after Argentina conceded the opening goal, Shariful allegedly celebrated and made taunting remarks towards Argentina fans. The exchanges escalated into a heated argument before several Argentina supporters reportedly assaulted him.
Shariful became unwell following the altercation. Local residents rushed him to hospital, where the attending doctor pronounced him dead.
Officer-in-Charge of Kotwali Model Police Station, Touhidul Anwar, said, "The incident began as a verbal dispute over the football match before escalating into a physical confrontation."
He said the body has been sent to the morgue at Cumilla Medical College Hospital for a post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.
Police said they have not yet received a formal complaint from the victim's family. They added that legal action will be taken if a complaint is lodged and that efforts are under way to identify those involved in the incident.
