Mymensingh imam arrested on charges of raping 8-year-old child
Police today sent the accused to court after a case was filed in connection with the incident.
Police have arrested a mosque imam over allegations of raping an eight-year-old madrasa student in Trishal, Mymensingh, reports Prothom Alo.
Police today (23 June) sent the accused to court after a case was filed in connection with the incident.
The accused, Md Ibrahim, 45, serves as an imam at a local mosque in the upazila.
Trishal Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mansur Ahmed said the child was allegedly raped when the child went to deliver food to the imam.
According to police, the child's father is a rickshaw-van puller, and the mother works at a garment factory.
The villagers took turns providing meals to the mosque imam, and the child went to deliver lunch on Friday (19 June) as it was their family's turn.
The accused allegedly raped the child and threatened not to disclose the incident to anyone.
The matter came to light yesterday when the child informed the family about the alleged rape.
As news of the incident spread, locals confronted the imam at the mosque.
At one stage, he reportedly admitted to the allegation.
Police later arrived at the scene, detained him and took him to the police station.
The victim's father filed a case at the police station last night.
After showing Ibrahim arrested in the case, police sent him to court today.
OC Mansur added that the child was sent to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for a medical examination and to court for the recording of the victim's statement.
