The last time a BNP-led administration presented a national budget was in 2006
The first budget session of the 13th national parliament is set to begin tomorrow (7 June), drawing significant political and economic interest as it marks the first budget session of the BNP-led government after returning to power nearly two decades later.
According to the parliamentary schedule released by the Parliament Secretariat, the opening day of the session will include the nomination of the panel of chairpersons, obituary references, a question-and-answer session, and the disposal of notices seeking attention to matters of public importance.
A report from a special committee on energy, formed under the Rules of Procedure of parliamentary standing committees, will also be placed before the House.
Sources at the Secretariat said Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury is scheduled to place the FY2026-27 national budget on 11 June. The last time a BNP-led administration presented a national budget was in 2006.
According to finance ministry sources, the new budget is being formulated in view of global economic uncertainty, inflationary pressures, challenges in revenue collection, and the need to boost investment.
The budget is expected to prioritise encouraging private sector investment, expanding the creative economy, generating employment, enhancing export competitiveness and improving the business environment.
According to sources, the size of the budget is likely to exceed Tk9 trillion, with a focus on expanding the tax net, modernising tax administration and increasing revenue collection.
The parliamentary schedule shows that regular proceedings, including question-and-answer sessions related to various ministries, will continue before the budget presentation.
After the budget is tabled, a general discussion will be held on it, followed by the passage of the Finance Bill and Appropriation Bill, completing the process of budget approval.
